The wellness blogosphere has been raving and ranting endlessly about the benefits of going dairy free and switching over to almond milk. Almond milks and other non-dairy nut milks are often labeled ‘mylks’ for identification and to avoid confusion in premium grocers and cafes across the globe. You’d notice this trend on wellness blogs, magazines and on Instagram- well unless you’ve been living under a rock. Dairy free converts report weight loss, noticeable changes in skin, hair and nails a few weeks later. Some people also swear by its detox benefits and a marked improvement in symptoms of indigestion and gastric reflux.
This trend is sweeping the world over and almond mylks are becoming extremely popular and commonplace among foodies, nutritional consultant’s, yogini’s, wellness enthusiasts as well as the dairy intolerant. Vegans, dairy intolerants and those that are dairy intolerant benefit greatly from this trend because almond mylks are a decadent and delicious substitute to regular milk. Restaurants and cafes all over the world are stocking various kinds of almond mylks or making their own and serving lattes, coffees, matcha and incorporating it into desserts. I tend to make my own almond milk at home and use it for cappuccinos, my breakfast smoothie or into my smoothie bowls and chia puddings.
Almonds are a rich source of protein, omega 3, fiber and heart healthy compounds that fight free radicals and help normalise blood cholesterol. They are pretty good sources of cardio protective healthy fats which helps boost satiety, regulate blood sugar levels and reduce cravings. Almond milk is a highly delectable way to get your recommended dosage of almonds without having to worry about the calories you’ve consumed. It is quite amazing that while a handful of almonds are highly calorific, a cup of unsweetened almond milk has only about 30 calories making it a great choice for conscious eaters and weight watchers. Just make sure that you are opting for the unsweetened or no added sugar varieties of almond mylks to make it even healthier. You can choose to sweeten it with coconut sugar, honey, agave or organic palm sugar to make it palatable and healthier.
Almond milks provide a good source of calcium, protein, potassium and fiber to vegans and vegetarians without piling on the calories. The only people that should steer clear of nut milks like almond mylks are those that are intolerant and or allergic to nuts and seeds because consuming tree nuts can cause fatal reactions like hives, swelling and anaphylaxis. It is prudent to have yourself and your children tested for nut allergies before consuming any nut milk.
To Be Healthy (TBH) believes in the goodness of almond milk and plan to introduce a lot of products with mylks in different flavours. To make the product even healthier and free from chemicals, additives and hormones in store-bought varieties; the company intends to prepare these in-house with premium grade almonds.
