About Emotional Freedom Techniques

By Siobhan Andrews Kapoor
I discovered EFT in 2016- I was going through a difficult break up and was experiencing very heavy emotions – guilt, loss, and a deep sense of sadness. As much as I wanted to break away from the person as I knew it was no longer right for us to be together, I was finding it really hard to find the strength I needed. On top of that I had recently moved to a new city in a new country with a new job and very few friends – needless to say there was a lot going on and I was feeling the strain! I turned to a friend who recommended I used EFT to help confront and process a lot of the difficult emotions I was feeling. I found a guided video online, and in the quiet of my new flat, I tapped. Despite not really having any idea what to expect, I had a very powerful experience and could feel a literal emotional and physical shift while I was doing the sequence. That was the turning point for me, and I’ve been using EFT almost daily ever since.

So, what is EFT? In textbook terms, Emotional Freedom Techniques (often referred to as EFT or “Tapping”) is a simple yet powerful tool which is used to help manage and ease physical, emotional, and mental pain or disturbance. Developed by Gary Craig in the USA in the 1980s, EFT is now used worldwide to help with countless conditions and issues including anxiety, trauma, phobias, and cravings. Recently there have also been some very interesting studies published around the effectiveness of EFT on patients suffering with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder.

EFT works on the core principle that “the cause of all negative emotions is a disruption in the body’s energy system.” Our Energy System is what flows through us – it’s our vital force – and is the foundation of many schools of wisdom including Yoga, Reiki, and Acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine, which refers to a network of energy channels that run throughout the body called “meridians”.

Often described as “emotional acupuncture,” EFT uses a simple tapping motion applied to specific points that correspond to the energy meridian endpoints in the upper half of the body, which helps stimulates the energy flow. Specific verbal statements are used in tandem with the physical tapping to focus in on the issue or feeling that we wish to resolve or release.

In my own coaching practice, I use EFT with my clients as a tool to explore and transform their experience of reality. After an informal discussion to cover any issues they want help with, I lead the client through a bespoke tapping sequence which allows us to explore the problem in a safe, gentle way.

Often when we tap together on their life experiences, especially ones that are painful or traumatic in nature, we can uncover deeply held beliefs (which are often not true) that have been holding us back. It’s common for people to come to me with issues such as a feeling of being stuck but not really being sure why, and by using Tapping we can get out of the cycle of mental chatter and clear some space for insights and intuition to come through.

The wonderful thing about EFT is that once you’ve learned the technique you can use it to tap on anything and everything! Personally, I often incorporate it into my morning routine and regularly use it to raise my energy levels, get focused, and to feel more motivated, or even when I’m feeling stressed or anxious. A friend recently told me she had even followed one of my Tapping videos before a job interview to boost her confidence!

EFT fits really well alongside other modalities such as meditation, yoga, and Reiki. When we use EFT or any other tool in this way, we take our wellbeing into our own hands (literally!) and make a commitment to our own healing journey. Whilst EFT can have a transformative effect on many people, it is never a substitute for therapy or medication, and I always recommend that my clients also pursue these options via a qualified doctor or practitioner should they need it.

Rightly said that the cause of all negative emotions is a disruption in the body’s energy system and EFT is all about taking its control
