My Eat, Pray, Love guide to Bali

The post was originally published for Vogue Digital here

Looking after oneself has never been a bigger priority, with lifestyle diseases steadily on the rise. People are now choosing health sanctuaries for holidays to refuel, de-stress and return revitalised. That’s what healing holidays are all about—getaways to cure and recover mindfully.

The Chiva Som in Thailand, COMO Shambhala in Bali, The Farm in the Philippines and The Sha in Spain are some retreats that offer state-of-the-art wellness facilities to calm those nerves, and leave you in better shape.
We visited Bali to try out all that this emerging wellness hotspot has to offer, and here are our recommendations:

Where to heal your body
The Yoga Barn in Ubud is for people to attend yoga classes, learn an inversion or two and even enroll into a yoga teacher programme. Radiantly Alive too takes yoga and meditation classes. The Muladhara treatment at the Four Seasons is highly sought after for balancing your energies and harmonising your chakras. The spa at the COMO Shambhala has a hot river stone massage or treks down to the riverbed that can help alleviate stress. Vegans and healthy eaters will be spoilt for choice with matcha lattes, smoothie bowls and acai bowls at Clear Cafe, Kafe, Down to Earth Cafe, Bali Buda, Nalu Bowls, Alchemy, Earth Cafe, Glow at Como Shambhala. Harness the power of Ayurvedic cooking at Amrtasiddhi cooking school and learn how to eat right for your dosha type.

Where to heal your mind
Visit Bali Silent Retreats if you are looking to calm your nerves, be silent and opt for a voluntary digital detox. Enter One World Retreats and try workshops by visiting masters from all over the world on meditation, yin yoga and mindfulness. Ubud has a lot of rituals with healing waters that can be conducted with the help of a guide.

Where to heal your soul
Trek up to Mt Batur and watch the sunrise or sunset. Go to Tirta Empul or Pura Besakih, the Monkey Forest in Ubud or visit Kintamani volcano, go rafting or trekking down Ayung River or visit five elements Bali for a curated wellness immersion like water healing or healing energy with the balians (traditional Balinese healers). Visit a balian like Ketut Liyer, who was in the movie Eat Pray Love, or Cok De Negara, who is highly sought after for his clairvoyance and healing powers. Go cycling or on a Segway ride along the paddy fields.
