Pilates studios with reformer and cadillac machines are still hard to find in the city. The wellness blogosphere is singing praises for this exercise form and its physiological benefits. Done correctly, it is a fantastic workout that elongates your muscles, improves posture, works your core and checks spinal alignment. A good pilates teacher can help improve your core stability, flexibility, help ease back pain and make you lithe and limber.
I had heard a lot about the Red Mat Pilates studio in Nirvana, Gurgaon so I knew I had to give it a shot. We decided to shoot one Tuesday afternoon with the instructor Taru Chaddha. The studio is well equipped with mats, props, ample sunlight and two reformer machines. Red Mat Pilates studio opened to the general public in 2013, and Taru Chaddha started taking classes for individuals and groups.
She was a fantastic teacher and helped show us the ropes before we got started because posture and technique are extremely crucial to pilates. Our workout that afternoon started with a warm up and stretches to get the heart pumping and blood flowing. We then worked the reformer with just enough resistance from the springs. The reformer is a fabulous contraption that can work the whole body and you can choose your level of resistance by adjusting the springs. We did a few rounds of the ‘the hundred’ and i could literally feel my core burning. Taru progressed by making us do some ‘leg circles’, variations of the ‘side split’ and hip opening sequences.
Pilates can really help tone, whittle that waist and sculpt a shapely derriere. Unlike weight training and exercising with machines, pilates lengthens the muscle fiber making your limbs look long and limber. We did a few elongating stretches on the reformer and a little bit of core work and then moved towards the barrel for some lengthening and back stretches. We finished a few core and glute exercises on the mat. Urvashi and I didn’t expect to be sweating so profusely post the shoot but we were pretty sore the next day.
I highly recommend Red Mat Pilates for Gurgaon residents and people who cross Nirvana on their commute back from work because it is an excellent facility with a hands on approach. Taru Chaddha is a fabulous instructor who focuses on technique, posture and precision and is extremely patient with her clients.
