Last week, I visited the Lodhi Hotel Spa after two long years. I learned that Sandie Johannsen had left Spa operations to join The Four Seasons in the Maldives and Meena Gurung has replaced her as the new Spa director. Like Sandie, Meena is an incredible woman who is brimming with ideas about health and wellness. We had a nice chat after which I was introduced to my massage therapist for the day.
The 90-minute Hot Stone Massage is a deep tissue massage that is performed with medicated oils and hot lava stones. The stones are traditionally either basalt or volcanic lava stones and help in grounding, getting rid of anxiety, and balancing chakras. A signature oil from Forest Essentials is also used to alleviate muscular strains, soreness, improve blood circulation, and facilitate lymphatic drainage. The therapeutic oil is a mixture of the antiviral and antiseptic properties of the sandalwood, antioxidants from pomegranate and the calming properties of vetiver (khus khus). I learned that this is an extremely common combination of therapeutic ingredients. Hot stone massages have also been particularly helpful to those with fibromyalgia, arthritis, carpal tunnel syndrome, and other inflammatory conditions.
The massage therapist strategically placed black volcanic stones on parts of my spine to ground me, restore balance, and dispel any kind of stress from the body. I told her not to be gentle but to perform manipulations, wherever necessary. I asked the therapist to give me a few extra minutes on my neck, shoulders and upper back to alleviate the soreness and stiffness from sitting on a desk for long hours. I almost fell asleep halfway through the treatment but was pleasantly awakened upon smelling my midday snack- aromatic herbal tea and some rice flour bread. My skin felt incredibly supple post-session and my shoulders felt lighter than ever! I thanked the therapist profusely before rushing in for a quick shower in between treatments.
Quick Notes-

My second treatment was The Thalgo Brightening and Rejuvenating Facial. Thalgo, an Australian brand, uses carefully sourced marine extracts in their products. The 60-minute ritual treats hyperpigmentation, skin sensitivity, and scars. The red algae extract, once assimilated by the skin, works towards reducing signs of premature ageing and oxidative stress. The licorice flower extract is used to lighten hyperpigmentation, thereby reducing discoloration. The antioxidant properties of vitamin C give you that boost for plumper, more supple skin.
I honestly don’t believe in the nationwide obsession with skin whitening and enjoy sunbathing regularly. However, I do have some hyperpigmentation under my eyes from late nights and an erratic sleep cycle. The therapist took special care to work on my problem areas and used a serum that worked almost instantly to alleviate my under-eye puffiness. She also told me about home remedies like virgin coconut oil, cold tea bags, and iced spoons for relief from puffy, tired eyes. While the mask was on towards the end of the treatment, she gave me a nice deep tissue head and shoulder massage, which once again, transported me to my happy place. I can’t wait to be back!
Quick Notes-
Brightening & Rejuvenating Facial

*Make sure you aren’t allergic to marine products like algae before starting with this facial so as to avoid hives, redness, and rashes.
